The Abuakwa South Municipal (formerly East Akim Municipal) is one of the 260 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 33 Municipalities and Districts in the Eastern Region.
The Abuakwa South Municipal is located in the central portion of the Eastern Region with the administrative capital as Kibi. It was elevated to a municipal status with LI 1878 in the year 2008 and has a total land area of approximately 725km2.
The Municipality is bounded by six districts namely Atiwa West District to the north, West Akim Municipal to the north-west, Fanteakwa South District to the east, New Juaben North Municipal to the south, Yilo Krobo Municipal to the south-east and Suhum Municipal to the west.
The population of the Municipality according to the 2010 population and housing census stands at 167,896 with 81,767 males and 86,129 females.
