The Nkwanta South Municipal is one of the 260 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 8 of Municipalities and Districts in the Oti Region.
The Municipality is located in the northernmost part of the Region. It lies between latitudes 7 30° and 8 45° North and longitude 0 10° and 0 45° East. Nkwanta South Municipal was carved out of Krachi West District in 1989. The Administrative Capital of the Municipal is Nkwanta.
The Municipal is bounded to the north by the Nkwanta North District, to the south by the Kadjebi District, to the east by the Republic of Togo and to the west by Krachi East District.
The population of the Municipality according to the 2010 population and housing census stands at 117,878 with 58,482 males and 59,396 females.
