The North Gonja District is one of the 260 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 7 MMDAs in the Savannah Region.
North Gonja District with its capital Daboya was carved from West Gonja and forms part of the new districts and municipalities created in the year 2012 and was inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 28th June 2012.
North Gonja District is located in the western part of the Northern Region of Ghana. It lies within longitude 10 51 and 20 581 West and Latitude 80 321 and 100 21 North and has a total landmass of about 4,845.5sq km, representing 6.9 percent of the total land size of the Savannah Region.
It shares boundaries with West Gonja and Wa East Districts to the west, Tolon District to the east, Mamprugu-Moagduri and Kumbungu Districts to the north and Central Gonja District to the south.
The population of the District according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 43,547 with 21,592 males and 21,955 females.
